The Unicorn Quest
The Unicorn Quest
by John Lee

Jarrod and Marianna
(known as Martin through much of the novel because she is masquerading as a boy) journey
from their home to find help in saving their world, which is being invaded by an alien
race of beings. The object of their quest is a unicorn, whose power will help them conquer
the invaders. Jarrod is a mage himself, and he is eager to find help for the other
magicians. This passage comes from the moments when the two are first encountering a
family of unicorns.

One minute the lea was a realm of small
things that hopped and hummed and flew and the next there were four unicorns standing
fetlock deep in grass and wildflowers. They shook their manes out in the guilding sun.
Amarine, the dam, gave a soft whinny of pleasure, trotted over to her and mumbled at the
hair over her ears. Martin giggled and rolled over and then sat up to rub the velvet hide
that covered the bony nose.
The
three colts stood around them for a while, quite still and seeming to concentrate, and
then ambled off to crop. Their mother turned her head to watch them before settling down
with what sounded like a histrionic sigh. Back legs first and then forelegs, she
maneuvered until she could comfortably lay her head in Martin's lap. This was how Jarrod
found them.
